Lumbar Spine Surgery

Lumbar spine surgery is the most common surgery performed by a neurosurgeon. Many lumbar spine problems, however, can be treated without surgery. Only after taking your medical history, examining you, and reviewing your diagnostic studies can an appropriate plan of treatment be recommended. In most cases conservative treatment will be recommended first.

Surgery is commonly recommended for herniated disc, lumbar stenosis, tumors, spondylolisthesis, congenital anomalies, and other conditions

If surgery is recommended it is important that you understand the goal of the surgery, the expected outcome, and the most common risks associated with that surgery. If you do not understand any of these things please ask. If a lumbar spine fusion is recommended, you will be referred to an Orthopaedic spine surgeon for that portion of the surgery. This team approach to complex spine problems has worked well. It is also important that you understand that portion of the surgery as well
